Prayer Letter: October 2025

Monday, October 6 – Friday, October 10

As we approach Thanksgiving in Canada (Monday, October 13), we invite you to pause with us in gratitude for God’s steady care of our community. Please pray that the Lord would cultivate in us thankful hearts, and remember especially students and others who may feel lonely at this time. May they experience companionship, welcome, and peace.

Monday, October 13 – Friday, October 17

We ask your prayers for Reenchanting the World: Philosophy, Spirituality, Ecology, Arts (Oct 16–18) at Toronto Metropolitan University, co-hosted by TMU and ICS. Local organizers include John Caruana (TMU) and our own Neal DeRoo, with an organizing committee that also features Héctor Acero Ferrer and Ron Kuipers. Featured voices include Richard Kearney, Mark I. Wallace, Michelangelo Frammartino, and Patricia June Vickers. Please pray for fruitful conversations, for hospitable collaboration among organizers, and for all who travel to attend. If you'd like to attend, please register here.

Monday, October 20 – Sunday, October 26

As classes press on and mid-semester work intensifies, please pray for stamina and clarity of mind for our students and instructors. Pray, too, for ICS staff who are preparing a cluster of late-October learning opportunities—may their planning be marked by creativity, kindness, and attention to detail.

Monday, October 27 – Sunday, November 2

This week, the MA-PhD program has its Fall Reading Week. Please pray for respite and restoration for students and faculty alike, that they would find rest, renewed energy, and quiet space to reflect. Pray also for inspiration and focus as students begin to work on their papers.

On Monday, Oct 27, Matt Bonzo is teaching a new Free to be Faithful course entitled Liquid Promises: The Spiritual and Cultural Crisis of Rural America. Please pray that this exploration of Appalachia’s story will help participants listen well to rural communities, discern the “liquid promises” of modernity, and imagine faithful forms of neighbor-love. Find more information and register here.

On Wednesday, Oct 29, Karen Swallow Prior is teaching a new Free to be Faithful course entitled The Good, The True, The Beautiful: Reading Literature to Restore the Soul. Pray that participants would discover fresh courage, empathy, and spiritual resilience through attentive reading—and that beauty would do its quiet work in all of us. Find more information and register here.

On Oct 30–31, Ontario Christian educators gather at Redeemer University for the Edvance Annual Gathering. Please pray for Edith van der Boom as she facilitates her interactive workshop, “Cultivating an Inclusion Mindset,” inviting educators to practice hospitality, reciprocity, and belonging in their classrooms. Pray for all presenters and attendees to leave encouraged and equipped for joyful, just, and inclusive learning communities.

Prayer Letter: September 2025

Monday, September 1 - Friday, September 5:

Fall Retreat

This past week students from around North America joined us for our ICS Fall Retreat (Sept. 5–7) at Crieff Hills Retreat Centre. At the start of every academic year, Senior Members, Junior Members, and staff set aside time to pray, worship, share stories, and set the tone for the months ahead. Please pray a prayer of thanksgiving for joyous laughter and new bonds.

Monday, September 8 – Friday, September 12:

As classes begin, pray for our instructors as they lead, and for students—new and returning—as they find their rhythm, courage, and curiosity.

  • Twentieth Century Authoritarianism (begins Sept. 11, Dr. Bruce Berglund) — Through case studies from modern European and Russian history, students consider how ordinary people—including Christians—responded to authoritarian rule, weighing complicity and resistance. Pray for moral clarity and courage. To register: https://f2bf.icscanada.edu/#page-m

MA/PhD courses:

Pray that conversations spark new ideas and that anxieties are eased as new students begin their ICS journey. Course list: https://links.icscanada.edu/ma-phd-courses

  • The Craft of Reflective Practice (Dr. Gideon Strauss) — Explores story-shaped, critically reflective practice: zooming in on an ordinary workday and out to career, community, and God’s world; developing qualitative research skills, an introduction to phenomenology, and a praxis for theory-informed, morally oriented professional life.

Saturday, Sept 13: Cal Seerveld’s Celebration of Life

Join us in giving thanks for the life and witness of Calvin Seerveld, beloved teacher, colleague, and friend. Pray comfort for the Seerveld family and for the extended ICS community.

Monday, September 15 – Friday, September 19:

First Academic Council (Sept. 15)

Pray for wisdom and clarity as Academic Council tends to courses, policies, and the shape of our common life in learning. Ask for imagination and patience as we steward ICS’s mission across programs and time zones.

Continue in prayer for all our fall courses—especially for new students as they settle into routines, manage workloads, and begin to find their research voices. Pray for our Registrar and Academic Office as they keep many moving pieces running smoothly.

Fall Big Read — Free to be Faithful (Sept. 17, 8:00pm ET)

Pray that participants in our Fall Big Read with Kristin Du Mez and Hanna Reichel will find spiritual grounding, hopeful imagination, and courage for faithful action.

In this year's Fall Big Read, featuring Reichel drawing from their new book, For Such a Time as This: An Emergency Devotional. In a moment of polarization, eroding democratic norms, and rising authoritarianism, Reichel offers a framework for Christian discernment rooted in Scripture, historical wisdom (including the Confessing Church’s witness), and core commitments of faith—guiding believers toward integrity in turbulent times. (Details & RSVP on our Free to be Faithful page: https://f2bf.icscanada.edu/#fall-big-read)

Monday, September 22 – Friday, September 26:

As seminars deepen and assignments loom, pray for focus and good health for students and instructors alike. Ask that discussions remain generous, that reading and writing be marked by clarity and wonder, and that Zoom rooms feel like hospitable spaces of genuine community.

Please also remember our Advancement and Finance teams as they support the day-to-day life of ICS behind the scenes. Give thanks for the faithfulness of our supporters, and pray for provision as we look toward the rest of the academic year.

Updated: ICS During COVID-19

MAY 3, 2022 UPDATE: ONLINE COURSES CONTINUE FOR 2022-23 ACADEMIC YEAR WITH POSSIBLE EXCEPTIONS

During the 2022-2023 academic year ICS learning will continue to take place online, using a combination of Zoom video-conferencing and Google Classrooms. Exceptions to this arrangement (to allow in-person learning) can be made at the written request of all the participants in a particular course, seminar, colloquium, or symposium with the written approval of the Academic Dean.

---

AUGUST 6, 2021 UPDATE: COURSES REMAIN ONLINE FOR FALL 2021 & WINTER 2022 SEMESTERS

In the interest of serving the needs of our global community of students and out of concern for the health of our students, instructors, and staff, ICS will continue to offer all learning interactions remotely during the Fall 2021 and Winter 2022 academic terms. The ICS executive leadership team will assess conditions during the Winter 2022 term to determine if it would be appropriate to offer some learning interactions in person as of the Summer 2022 term. Students who started ICS programs remotely can rest assured that remote learning will remain an option with regard to all courses and mentoring, even if ICS resumes some in-person learning, also after the Winter 2022 term.

Course information can be found in our Course Catalogue throughout the year. Please reach out to Elizabet, course leaders, or our Senior Members if you have any questions or concerns.

NOVEMBER 25, 2020 UPDATE: DELAYED START TO WINTER 2021 SEMESTER

The following is an important change in the start date for winter term classes in January. ICS will be following the lead of the University of Toronto, Knox College, and the Toronto School of Theology by delaying the start of the Winter 2021 semester by one week.

This means that classes for the winter term will now begin on Monday, January 11, 2021. For regular 13-week synchronous courses, final assignment deadlines will also be extended by one week. The dates for Reading Week remain the same (February 15-19, 2021). The Academic Calendar has been updated to reflect these changes, and a list of Winter 2021 courses is available here.

Below is a brief note from President Ronald A. Kuipers about this schedule change:

To quote President Gertler of the University of Toronto, these decisions are “prompted by the fact that we’ve all been under an extraordinary amount of stress for months now, because of the burdens imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.... [W]e care deeply about the wellness of each and every one of you. We want to make sure that you’re able to rest and recharge, and to make the most of the upcoming holiday break.”

Let me echo President Gertler's comments, and offer my own words of encouragement to the ICS community. The global pandemic has thrown many challenges our way, and has dramatically changed our daily working and studying routines. I deeply appreciate the efforts everyone has made to maintain community in the midst of our relative isolation. Let's continue to support, pray for, and reach out to each other. If you are struggling, please let us know, so that we can find ways to care for you or address any concerns that you have. Let us continue to bless each other as we have since this all began.

I wish you all God's strength and peace as we continue on this strange journey,

Ron

Please reach out to Elizabet, course leaders, or our Senior Members if you have any questions or concerns.

AUGUST 1, 2020 UPDATE: FALL SEMESTER SCHEDULE

After a successful summer of online learning, ICS has made the decision to continue to deliver all of our course offerings remotely for the fall semester. We believe this will best enable our Senior and Junior Members to stay safe and healthy while still allowing classes to meet at a distance. We'll miss the presence of our students on campus, but we have growing anticipation for the start of another academic year and of ICS community life (albeit a virtual one!) with new and returning students alike.

Course syllabi are being finalized over the remainder of the summer and details are being ironed out, but the Fall Course Schedule has been set and course descriptions are now available. Our roster of fall courses can be found here: www.icscanada.edu/fall-2020. And, as always, you can reach out to our Registrar Elizabet Aras with any questions you might have about what the upcoming semester will look like.

APRIL 1, 2020 UPDATE: EVENTS AND DEADLINES

ICS Leadership, staff, and faculty have been hard at work in past weeks monitoring the daily developments to the ongoing COVID-19 public health crisis, strategizing, and discerning immediate and long-term ways forward for our programming, courses, and events. Today, ICS had to make a number of difficult decisions regarding quickly-approaching events, deadlines, and courses.

Unfortunately, in response to current public health recommendations and the enforced limitations on travel and public gatherings, we must CANCEL Convocation 2020, the honourary doctorate celebration of Dr. Barbara Carvill, and ART in Orvieto 2020. Lord willing, we will have the opportunity to revisit these celebratory and educational opportunities again next year. Thus, our current intention is to honour our 2020 graduates together with our 2021 graduates at our Convocation next May, and to likewise gather to celebrate Dr. Carvill at that time. We also intend to offer ART in Orvieto again during summer 2021.

We've also decided to adapt the original plans and deadlines for our Undergraduate Workshop, the summer course on Hannah Arendt, and admission to our MA-EL and MWS-ART programs. For this year's Undergraduate Workshop, we have tentatively rescheduled the event for Fall 2020 and extended the submission deadline until July 31. For our MA-EL and MWS-ART programs, we've extended our standard application deadline until August 1. And for the Hannah Arendt course, we're currently considering the possibility of the course being delivered remotely.

Given the unpredictability of current circumstances, ICS will continue to offer its courses remotely until further notice in order to remain as adaptable as possible in our efforts to make an ICS education readily available. So please stay tuned for more information regarding upcoming summer course opportunities currently in development, as well as increased possibilities for online education into the next school year. And, if you have any questions about these or any other ICS courses, programs, and events, please do not hesitate to reach out to us by phone or email!

We remain cautiously hopeful in these days and, as always, invite your prayers for students, staff, and faculty alike in their various callings and day-to-day lives.

MARCH 17, 2020 UPDATE:

Following the city of Toronto's increased social distancing recommendations, and the University of Toronto's closure of most of their library locations, ICS will close its administrative offices and library effective today until public health authorities declare it advisable to resume in-person operations. We greatly value the health and safety of our staff, faculty, and students--as well as our neighbours--and we consider this a small but important step to slowing the spread of this virus.

ICS staff and faculty will continue working regular hours remotely during this time, and may be reliably contacted by email if you wish to get in touch for any reason. We will continue to monitor the public health situation daily and will make any important updates (including the status of upcoming events and summer courses) known to you here as soon as possible. To that end, we also continue to invite applications to our Undergraduate Workshop in May, our course on Hannah Arendt in April-June, and ART in Orvieto in July-August. No fees for these courses/events will be charged until it is clear that the courses/events will in fact take place.

In the meantime, our Senior and Junior Members forge ahead with classes and projects, our staff go on planning and executing everyday operations, and we all pray for safety and swift healing for those affected by this health crisis.
---

MARCH 13, 2020: SUSPENSION OF IN-PERSON CLASSES

In light of the ongoing development of the COVID-19 virus, and in conjunction with our colleagues at the Toronto School of Theology and the University of Toronto, ICS has determined that it is appropriate to cancel all ICS in-person seminars for the remainder of the Winter semester (March 16-April 10). Junior and Senior Members have already been notified accordingly about how to participate in their respective seminars via teleconference during this time period.

Because we share a campus with both Knox College and the University of Toronto, ICS has committed to following the lead of Knox College, the Toronto School of Theology, and the University of Toronto with respect to the implementation of any social distancing measures deemed appropriate.

For the latest on these specific measures, you can read a message from the President of UofT here. For the latest on Canada's COVID-19 monitoring, national response, and prevention and preparation advice, please visit the Government of Canada website or the Toronto Public Health page.

Following campus measures, the ICS offices and library will remain open during this period, and we will continue with daily operations. We will keep you updated as to whether any of this changes, and about the status of upcoming ICS events as we continually monitor the state of affairs on campus, locally, and globally. We also request during this time that anyone who feels ill stay home and seek appropriate healthcare if necessary.

ICS is grateful for your patience and support as we adjust and attend to the unfolding situation day to day, and as we seek to safeguard the health and wellbeing of our students, staff, and faculty.

Winter 2022 Courses Announced!

With fall courses well underway, we're starting to look ahead to the Winter 2022 term at ICS. We’re very excited to announce the courses we'll be offering starting in January—all of which will remain available online.

We’ll be running a number of courses that touch on topics ranging from Canadian colonialism, apocalypse and the book of Revelation, Deeper Learning, school governance, Franciscan thinkers, and, of course, Reformational Philosophy. Course syllabi and more information will be made available in the coming weeks, so visit our Winter 2022 landing page for the latest details on the following courses:

Birthpangs of the New Creation: Judgment unto Salvation in the Book of Revelation (Nik Ansell)
In our culture, “apocalypse” typically refers to a cataclysmic, catastrophic ending, real or imagined. But what if the book from which we derive the term, i.e. the “Apocalypse”—or “Revelation”—of John, refers less to the end of the world than to a transition between the two Ages? With Nik Ansell, explore the topics of death, judgment, heaven, and hell as they are portrayed in the book of Revelation.

Deeper Learning: From Wonder to Inquiry to Practice (Edith van der Boom)
In this course for instructional leaders, explore learning as a journey from wonder to inquiry to practice. Edith van der Boom helps Christian educators develop Deeper Learning within the context of a celebration of the learner, a mindfulness towards learning design, and a responsiveness to culture.

How to Govern a School: Board Governance, Decision-Making, and Community-Engagement (Gideon Strauss)
Designed for new and aspiring principals, school leadership teams, and school boards; this new course, taught by Gideon Strauss, provides frameworks and tools for leadership in educational governance. Learn about the work of nurturing relationships among school stakeholders, with a focus on the pivotal relationship between the board and school leadership.

Individuality in the Franciscan Thought of John Duns Scotus and William of Ockham (Bob Sweetman)
Examine the thought of John Duns Scotus and William of Ockham in relation to the doctrine of “individuality” in this seminar with Bob Sweetman. Against the backdrop of Franciscan spirituality and Aristotelianism, this course will closely consider philosophical accounts of our daily experience of both universality in the world (the fact that creatures come to us in kinds) and individuality (the fact that it is individual creatures that come to us in kinds).

Recognition or Refusal? Cultural Politics in a Colonial Canada (Andrew Tebbutt)
Canada is often described as a democratic, “multicultural” nation; however, a growing number of Indigenous thinkers and activists are arguing that Canada’s approach to recognizing Indigenous peoples remains culturally and economically colonial. With Postdoctoral Research Associate Andrew Tebbutt, explore the idea of recognition and its application in Canadian politics through the lens of Glen Sean Coulthard’s book Red Skin, White Masks: Rejecting the Colonial Politics of Recognition and alongside other Indigenous authors such as Leanne Betasamosake Simpson and Taiaiake Alfred.

Religion, Life and Society: Reformational Philosophy (Bob Sweetman)
Explore central issues in philosophy through the lens of Herman Dooyeweerd, Dirk Vollenhoven, and the “Amsterdam School” of neoCalvinian thought. In this foundational ICS course with Bob Sweetman, you'll test the relevance of the reformational philosophical tradition for recent developments in Western philosophy and attend to critiques of foundationalism, metaphysics, and modernity.

Interdisciplinary Seminar (IDS) To be announced
Every winter, ICS holds its annual Interdisciplinary Seminar, which is an opportunity for Junior and Senior Members from different academic disciplines to come together and explore an idea or question from a variety of points of view. Stay tuned for more information about this year’s topic!

If you want to help promote our courses but aren’t sure how, feel free to reach out to our Recruitment Coordinator, Brenna Wehrle, at recruitment-coordinator@icscanada.edu!

ICS Library Catalogue in New Home

The ICS Library Catalogue is now enjoying its new home at ics.insigniails.com. This upgrade from the previous Inmagic based catalogue gives the ICS library a new and better search system, permanent URLs and worldwide discovery. Additionally, it also converts our library catalogue into a standard data format, protecting our cataloguing efforts from obsolescence for years to come, and it obviates the need to maintain an in-house catalogue and web server.

The new catalogue is now live and accessible from our library website at library.icscanada.edu/search.

We are particularly grateful to Shawn for arranging this time of transition. We are all deeply thankful for Shawn's sterling service these past several years, as he stepped up to steadily increasing responsibilities at ICS.

Jeff Hocking, Student Services and Financial Aid Officer, has agreed to accept appointment as Interim Registrar, for a period of three months. Phone-a-thon 2011

We are wrapping up our annual Phone-a-thon. A BIG THANK YOU to our ICS Board members, FICS Board members, faculty members and student volunteers who are making the calls and to all our supporters for taking the time to speak with them.

Many of you have shared your ICS stories with our callers—stories that encourage us as we look to a positive future, including the opening of the Research Centre. Our students also enjoyed sharing their ICS stories—stories that have given you a first-hand glimpse of how your gift is helping ICS through its programs to bring renewal and hope to our world.

If for some reason we missed connecting with you by phone, you still have time to send in your gift. Your gift is vital to our work. You can donate online at http://www.icscanada.edu/ics/giving/, call us at 414-979-2331 ext 223 (Vidya Williams) or ext 221 (Kathy Lynch) to make a credit card donation or mail your cheque to Institute for Christian Studies, 100-229 College St., Toronto ON M5T 1R4.
